
Getting UV Curing Right with Gallium Iodide Lamps
Standard mercury lamps are fine for most things, but sometimes they just aren’t precise enough. If you’re dealing with high-resolution photoresist or tricky adhesive bonding, you need something more surgical. That’s where our Gallium Iodide (GaI) lamps come in. They hit those specific i-line (365nm) and h-line (405nm) peaks that make the difference between a perfect cure and a wasted batch.
The Balance of Power and Heat
Inside these lamps, we use a mix of gallium iodide salts and a halogen cycle to push the light right toward that UVA/UVB border. Here’s the thing: when you’re picking your lamp, you’ve got to play a bit of a balancing act with wattage and tube diameter. If you cram high wattage into a small tube, you get a ton of irradiance (W/cm²), which means your curing happens fast. Really fast. But there’s a catch. Pushing too much power into a short space creates heat spots. If your cooling system can’t keep up, you’re looking at warped quartz or electrodes that give out way too soon. It’s all about finding that sweet spot.
How We Actually Build Them
We don’t cut corners on the materials. We use high-purity fused quartz for the envelope because it stays clear—it doesn’t soak up the UV light. For the electrodes, we go with tungsten. It’s the only way to handle the brutal thermal stress that happens right when the lamp kicks on. We also make sure the end-caps fit your existing gear perfectly. Why? Because a loose connection at the base leads to arcing. And arcing will fry your socket in a matter of weeks. To stop that from happening, we weld our joints to keep the vacuum tight and the gas where it belongs.
Making It Work in Your Shop
Most of our customers use these for semiconductor lithography or precision optical coatings. If you’re setting these up, make sure your power supply is rock solid. If the voltage swings, the spectral peak shifts. That might not sound like a big deal, but it’s enough to ruin a whole batch of parts.
