
Squeezing High-Density IR Heat into Mobile Can Seamers
Trying to fit a high-performance IR preheating system into a mobile, small-shop machine is basically a giant game of Tetris. When your footprint is that tight, you just can’t afford bulky heating elements. That’s why we go with short-wave infrared lamps. They give you the heat density you need for a perfect seam without eating up half your workspace. The struggle with heat and space In a mobile setup, you can’t be sitting around waiting for a machine to warm up. We use IR lamps that hit peak temp in seconds. By focusing all that energy into a narrow quartz tube, the heat goes exactly where it belongs—on the can rim—instead of bleeding into the rest of the machine frame. But here’s the catch: if you crank the wattage too high in a closed box, you’ll fry your wiring. It’s a balancing act. You need enough power to get the job done, but you’ve got to have active ventilation to keep your control board from melting. The nuts and bolts We stick with quartz halogen tubes. Why? Because quartz handles thermal shock way better than glass. To make these a breeze to install in different mobile frames, we use standard connectors like R7s or Sk15. It means if a tube burns out, you can swap it in a couple of minutes. No need to rip apart the whole electrical panel. Plus, we often add a specific coating to the quartz. This stops the heat from just bouncing off the metal and actually forces it to penetrate the surface. Making it work in the real world Wiring these into a mobile unit takes a bit of care. Small workshops often have messy power with voltage spikes that can snap an IR filament in a heartbeat. To fix that, we pair the lamps with an SCR power controller. It lets you dial in the heat depending on what you’re canning. Aluminum and tin-plated steel don’t react the same way, so you need that flexibility. Just keep in mind that this kind of intense heat comes with a trade-off. If you run them at 100% all the time, those filaments are going to wear out faster. It’s just the nature of the beast.
