
Stop Trapping Water in Your Can Seals
If you’ve got moisture hanging around the seaming area of a can, you’ve got a problem. It’s a recipe for contamination or, even worse, a seal that just fails. To fix this, we use short-wave infrared (IR) curing lamps to basically flash-evaporate those tiny water droplets right before the seal locks in. It’s more than just drying things off. It’s about building a wall against bacteria.
Why IR Actually Works
Standard heating is just too slow. When you’re running a high-speed canning line, you can’t wait around for hot air to do the job. That’s where IR comes in. The radiation goes straight through the surface of the can and the coating to hit the water molecules directly. It forces that leftover moisture out of the seaming zone instantly. If you leave that water trapped in the fold, you’re just asking for oxidation or microbial growth under the seal. And nobody wants that.
Getting the Heat Right
We set these lamps up to pack a lot of heat into a very small space. The goal is to blast the can rim without cooking the actual food inside. You need a tight focal point. Here’s the thing: if you speed up your conveyor, you’ve got to adjust. You’ll either need to bump up the wattage or move the lamps closer to keep that evaporation rate where it needs to be.
The Practical Stuff
These lamps are designed to slide right into the spots where your old heating elements used to be. We use quartz envelopes to keep everything clean and food-safe. But a couple of heads-ups. High-wattage IR lamps pull a lot of power. Make sure your control panels can handle the load, or you’ll be tripping breakers right in the middle of a peak cycle. Also, these things gethot. Really hot. I highly recommend installing heat shields so you don’t accidentally fry your nearby sensors or wiring. And don’t forget the ventilation—you need a way to get that steam moving away from the line so it doesn’t just settle back down.
